How often should I change my furnace / central air filter?

My furnace and central air has the same channels. How often should I change filters? (I use 3M brand filter). The home inspector said once every three months, the guy who installed the central air, said once a month.

Setup was correct. You must change the filter every month. Air conditioning systems are very low pressure. This means that the airflow through the channel has a very low momentum. For comparison, when you talk about pressure in a balloon, you measure in pounds per square inch. In a household Climate control, you're talking about ounces of water pressure per square inch. This is a very small pressure drop, so accumlation dust on the filter rapidly reduce the flow. Two things can happen when the air filter is connected .... Airflow over the cooling coils is very low and the air becomes very cold, making the water drop into the sewer system. This may cause your drain system to become overwhelmed and you will to leak out of the attic AC unit and on your cieling. The other thing is, it can overwhelm your AC system and cause premature. Buy cheap whispy air filters 3 per pack and replace them every month. I use my yahoo calendar to send me an email reminder automatically each month.
